An Arm-Purse from Croy Hill, and Coins from Bar Hill

One of the artefacts found at Croy Hill is a copper alloy arm-purse (above). This would have contained coins like the ones shown in the photograph.

COINS

Roman coinage was distributed throughout the Empire, to provide a common currency and to make trade easier. The coins bore an image of the head of the reigning Emperor on one side, like the one shown below. This is a gold coin (an Aureus) showing the head of Antoninus Pius, under whom the Antonine Wall was built.

Among the many artefacts found in the deep, stone-lined well at Bar Hill Fort were the coins shown below. Many of these are made of tin, and may have been made in or near the fort. They may have been cast into the well as offerings to its guardian spirit.
