Chapter 3 |
3. The Healing Achieved Through Michael Chapman (Britain)
The extent of the ability to heal through the combined effort of Basil Lang and Michael Chapman is demonstrated by the sheer scope of ailments that have been successfully treated. Rita Falconer from Birmingham wrote saying: 'Nearly all the members of my family have needed healing from Michael Chapman for various conditions, ranging from nervous debility to terminal cancer...All of these treatments have been outstandingly successful'.
When George relates instances of psychic healing, he makes reference to one of those healings to which Rita refers, that was carried out through Michael.(1) This case was that of Vera Halford who was terminally ill with breast cancer. Rita, her daughter whose comment is quoted above, takes up the story in her own grateful account. She explains how, after the diagnosis of cancer, her mother's situation became worse through secondary cancers developing in her liver and elsewhere. Due to her rapidly deteriorating state, she began to receive chemotherapy. Nonetheless, Vera's future appeared bleak and Rita was advised by medical staff that she should not expect her mother to be alive by Christmas as she was 'a very sick woman'.
Fortunately, Rita became aware of Michael on reading an article in The Cambrian News about a woman who practised healing. Rita made an appointment for her mother to see the healer and although an improvement was noted, the healer thoughtfully suggested that Rita find a healer closer to their home as the long journey was reducing some of the benefits of the healing received.
Rita then began a search for a healer closer to home. On reading material about the subject, she read about one healer who was assisted by spirit doctors. Rita then understandably thought, 'This sounded incredible to someone who knew nothing of such matters, and I wondered if such things could really work?'. Rita then contacted the healer to whom the article referred, this being George Chapman: he immediately began distant healing for her mother and suggested that for contact healing they visited Michael at his Birmingham clinic.
Rita and Vera then made an appointment and proceeded to make the journey to Birmingham. On reaching the clinic, they realized the distance that some people were willing to travel to receive contact healing by Michael, some travelling from the far ends of the country. Rita continues: 'Mother's first appointment with Michael was made for 20th January 1993. We just hoped that she would live long enough to get there. The chemotherapy had lowered her resistance to infection and by this time, had developed a virus that made her so ill, she could barely stand'. In fact, Vera's situation had worsened so much that Rita decided that she was too ill to travel to the clinic: despite this, Roma Wright who is responsible for organizing Michael's Birmingham clinic stressed that her condition was such that healing was actually now more important than ever.
Rita describes how Roma 'begged me to get mother there, knowing the help that she would receive through healing, and advised us to meditate at 10pm that night to ask the spirit doctors for the strength needed to get to Michael'.
Vera was able to make the forty-five minute journey the following day, and Rita recalls how they were taken to the clinic healing room, where they met Michael whom she describes as 'a gentle, humorous man who soon put us at ease'. Rita also mentions how Michael's 'relaxed and sincere manner encouraged my mother' and as he carried out contact healing, Vera 'visibly relaxed and enjoyed the healing, as the warmth from Michael's hands eased away her pain and made her feel better immediately'.
Rita noticed how her mother's demeanour improved within a matter of hours, and for the first time within weeks, she was able to eat solid food and 'progressed rapidly as the days went by'. On seeing her consultant at a later date, Rita says that he was 'totally and utterly amazed at how the tumours had shrunk'. Furthermore, 'he could not believe the rate of progress she had made, using words like "wonderful", "unbelievable" through to "miraculous"'.
However, the initial elation became less when it was apparent that Vera's heart had been affected by the chemotherapy and was by this time experiencing severe breathlessness. It was decided that the only practical option to resolve the problem was by operating on Vera and fitting a pace-maker. In time, the hospital contacted Vera and asked her to attend without delay. However, she had already arranged an appointment to see Michael and considered that this should be her highest priority. Rita says that: 'Consequently, Michael gave her healing along with the strength and confidence to face up to her operation which was performed within twenty-four hours. Two days later she was back at home and [had] made a superb recovery'.
Rita continues this marvellous account by saying how in the summer of 1993, her mother visited the consultant clinical oncologist who said that she was 'absolutely terrific'. Many patients are apprehensive about informing medical staff about receiving spirit healing, but in this case, the family told the consultant. Rita records how 'he listened intently to all we had to say, and willingly entered into a discussion about it. In fact, most of the consultation was taken up with discussing spirit healing. After this, his instruction to Vera was surely correct: 'You must carry on seeing this man' and also added: 'There are things that work which we just can't explain or understand'.
Vera's improvement has continued, so much so that the Macmillan nurse no longer has to call, and visits to the hospital, so that her situation can be monitored, are no more frequent than every three months. Vera has now had her life returned to her, being able to leave her home and socialize. Not surprisingly, Rita notes that 'not only is she physically better, but she has developed an incredible will to be well and stay well'.
It is worthwhile noting that even with this restored health, Michael recommended that Vera, as he does with other patients, continue with distant healing by totally relaxing and 'tuning in' at 10pm each night.
When Vera visited Michael for healing, she was accompanied by Jim, her son-in-law. Due to the tremendous strain placed upon him through his mother-in-law's terminal illness, he had reached the stage where he had lost confidence and was barely able to hold on to his occupation. He had sought help through relaxation therapy, but no long-term effects had been achieved. He therefore sought help from Michael and the effect of a healing session was immediate. Even before Jim had arrived home, those who were with him became aware of a change in his attitude, becoming noticeably positive and cheerful.
Jim described how in a subsequent session, Michael had placed his hands upon his shoulders and he became aware of 'an almost unbearable energy' that 'began to surge through his body, so intense that he even had difficulty in breathing'. After a short while, this subsided and on returning home, he was able to have a good night's sleep and from thereon, his health and well-being improved so much so that he resumed his interests and was even able to secure a job that he had been wanting for many years.
Rita also refers to how Julie, her twelve-year old daughter, had suffered from tonsilitis and a variety of infections that sometimes resulted in her finding it difficult to speak, swallow or even breathe. Rita describes how for years she had been prescribed 'an endless dose of antibiotics and paracetamol'. She decided that Michael was the only solution to this on-going problem that was obviously distressing for a child of Julie's age. Having already seen the healing of Vera, her grandmother, Julie gladly went to see Michael and 'reacted well to him, his humorous, caring personality'.
Rita describes how 'the effect of the healing was virtually instantaneous. The swelling in her throat subsided, and she was able to eat properly again'. As so many criticize spirit healing for only producing temporary results, the notable factor in Julie's case was that, 'her improvement was total and it has lasted'. The effect of healing is often not only physical, but relevant to the personality and outlook. Rita observed of her daughter that she 'has developed greater confidence and is much happier in herself since being healed by Michael'.
The true extent of the healing is surely demonstrated by the patient's demeanour after healing. In Julie's case this was adequately illustrated by her, a girl once unable to speak or even breathe on occasions, becoming an active and enthusiastic member of her local youth theatre and readily accepting speaking roles.
Such healings of course affect the whole family and Rita has described how she, through healing for herself, has become more calm and patient, and those around her have commented upon this. In sum, 'Michael's healing has not only helped me, but made life more pleasant for my family too!'.
Another case in which a child was involved was that of Daniel Tapping of Derby, who was suffering such extreme asthma that it was necessary for Sharon, his mother to move him by an infant's pushchair. Sharon had discovered that not adopting this mode of transportation resulted in the boy experiencing severe bouts of coughing. Following healing by Michael, an improvement was noticeable within a short time and after only a month, the cough was no longer present. Of this case, the specialist treating Daniel confirmed that his chest had become clear.
Sharon also requested Michael's assistance in respect of Simon, Daniel's brother. This was after being advised that an operation was required to deal with the hydrocell (a lump effected by fluid) with which he had been born. Naturally concerned about this and having asked Michael for help, contact healing was undertaken, Three days later, on seeing the consultant, Sharon was told the lump that Simon had had for eighteen months had gone.
Some of those cases referred to Michael have had spectacular results. One such case was that of Thomas who had experienced convulsions from infancy and appeared not to be developing as he should, either mentally or physically.
At eighteen months, Janet Blunn from Telford, his grandmother became aware that Thomas could barely hold his head up and was only able to sit up if supported. Further problems arose and naturally his family became increasingly distressed. Originally told by doctors that the cause of the problem could not be determined, they were then told that the young boy's dilemma was brought about by an incurable brain tumour.
Janet's daughter had begun to become interested in the subject of Spiritualism and came across the name of George Chapman in her reading. She therefore wrote to George and distant healing for Thomas commenced immediately. Janet comments on how, 'from the very beginning, we noticed improvements. Within four months Thomas could sit up on his own'. Thomas was then taken to Michael at his Birmingham clinic and Janet's report of improvement from that time, is worth quoting in full:'We have now been seeing Michael for two years and Thomas has made great progress in that time. The convulsions have become far less frequent and far less severe. Five weeks after his first visit he took his first steps and he can now walk unaided; he can speak and make small conversation and is toilet trained. The glazed "far away" look he had has completely gone. Mentally and physically he is still somewhat behind for his age, but we hope that in time he will catch up. More significantly, his last C.T. scan shows that the tumour apparently hasn't grown in these two years'.
Unless one has actually been in such a dreadful situation, it is of course impossible to fully appreciate what the healing of such a young child can really mean to his immediate family. A little of this however is relayed by Janet's description of the after-events:'I can't describe the sense of relief and hope we have all felt since Thomas has been seeing Michael. We have total belief that the healing is helping a very great deal and we are all convinced that Thomas wouldn't be as he is today without the help of Michael and his father. We dread to think what might have happened to him if Julie hadn't had the insight to write to them. Thomas's life is much richer and fuller thanks to their help. God bless them both'.
Although Michael does not seek attention for himself or his work, this does not prevent patients who have received healing from reporting the success in periodicals. Joan Crackles from Derby told Psychic News (27/7/91) that she visited Michael when he was carrying out healing in Birmingham. She had arranged a consultation after being told by a consultant that a cataract had begun to develop in her right eye. In addition to this bleak news, Joan had experienced difficulties with her sight in respect of her left eye since childhood. However, after seeing Michael, she realized that the vision in her left eye was much improved, and on a further appointment with her consultant, she was told, 'the cataract is very minute now'.
It is not only the severe cases with which Michael has had success. Those ailments that while not life-threatening nevertheless can and do diminish a person's quality of life have been successfully treated by Michael's spirit healing.
Brian Perry heard about Michael through a friend, and contacted him to arrange contact healing as he found himself limited in what he was able to do through back pain. For those who have suffered this, it will be appreciated how debilitating the problem is - and how it evades any long-lasting and complete remedy. Brian had contact healing from Michael and found that within only a matter of a few days he was able to carry out work that he been previously unable to.
In the case of June Perry, she was so delighted with the improvement obtained after healing from Michael, she contacted Psychic News and explained how she had been helped. She related how she had suffered migraine from childhood and by the time she had reached adulthood it had reached the stage where it was becoming as she said, 'unbearable'.
She began to make enquiries about the help available and for two years she tried or investigated various forms of treatment including acupuncture, reflexology and even visiting a psychic surgeon; none of these resolved her problem. Only gaining relief through a drug, the strongest one available for migraine, June reached the stage where she had to take early retirement, albeit only in her forties and having sought out a remedy for the problem for some sixteen years. Obviously matters appeared bleak for June, but she came across a letter from a woman from Wickford, who referred to a breast lump that disappeared following a visit to Michael.
She also recounted how she had asked Michael whether he would make the journey to Wickford to conduct healing there, and he had agreed to do this on a regular basis. June then set out trying to ascertain where and when Michael held his clinic and after a good deal of research, she obtained the details that she wanted and was able to arrange an appointment to see Michael at the Wickford clinic. She describes how 'I found Michael so gentle, kind and unassuming, yet the healing which has been given to me through him has been instant and dramatic'.
She goes on to say how the migraine that had been present for so much of her life was, in her own words, 'switched off'. Relevant in view of what had become necessary in earlier years, she had not needed to use any medication, and her account of the situation was surely more than adequate: 'To be free of all that misery is a miracle indeed'. Of Michael, she went on to say: 'I am so grateful to Michael and his spirit guides who work with him. He has truly changed my life and I cannot thank him enough' (Psychic News, 27/12/97).
On hearing that an introduction was being written about Michael's work, I was contacted by Mary Brookes, of Bristol. Mary had suffered serious sight impairment for many years: by 1954 she had already lost sight in her left eye due to a detached retina, despite a number of operations. By 1991, she was advised that in view of the deterioration that had occurred over the years she was deemed to be blind. The amount of sight that remained was only slight and she was unable to see more than a few feet in front of her and says she 'was also unable to recognize anyone when outdoors'.
About two years later, Mary read about the work of Michael and his success with a patient who had suffered with glaucoma and Mary then decided to contact Michael who began distant healing for her. After this commenced, Mary recalls 'my sight began to improve almost immediately'. Due to her sight difficulties she had given up work in 1989, but was able to undertake this again. Her summary of the healing by Michael Chapman and Basil Lang is surely worth considering: 'But for Michael and his helpers, I would probably be blind now. Instead of being handicapped, I am leading a full and busy life'.
Denis (a pseudonym) from the Midlands wrote and referred to the considerable discomfort he suffered with breathing and how after contacting Michael, this was resolved. A problem that caused him no less discomfort was a back injury. Although the pain was lessened after being given treatment by his doctor, Denis sought help from Michael as it was causing problems for him. Denis records that Michael 'put his hand in the area for about half a minute and within ten days it had gone!'.
Further help was made available in respect of Denis' father-in-law, a man in his nineties. He developed a leg ulcer, obviously something of a serious nature in someone of this age, and Michael was contacted. Distant healing began and Denis refers to how 'the ulcer dried up and is virtually healed to everyone's amazement'. The success achieved through the clinics held at different locations is undeniable as it provides an opportunity for contact healing for those who would otherwise be wholly unable to see Michael.
Mary Cannon, J.P., of Holybourne in Hampshire, is so impressed by Michael's integrity and healing ability, she allows him to use her home for healing several times a year. She describes how: 'People come from far and wide to visit Michael, and they find him a most comforting and helpful man both physically and mentally. People come over and over again and I know that they have benefited immensely from his healing powers which I have noticed are growing stronger. It is a lovely, relaxing and worthwhile experience to have healing from him'.
It is hardly surprising that, in addition to the healing, some paranormal events are evident in this area. Vera Edmonson accompanied her husband to a clinic being held by Michael in Wickford and she reported that after seeing Michael, her husband 'had an instant relief'. In the case of Vera herself, she had problems with her own health. After seeing Michael, she reported that her blood pressure had now been corrected and tests undertaken at the hospital revealed a recovery. Vera commented that, 'I haven't felt so well for twenty years'. Vera also wrote to Psychic News regarding an experience when she visited the Chapmans with her family, and her son took photographs of a waterfall at Cennarth Falls. The following day she spoke with Dr Lang through the entranced George Chapman and they discussed the beauty of the area that she had visited earlier.
She then relates: 'On returning home we developed the film and much to my amazement and almost disbelief, Dr Lang's face lies on the surface of the water near the spot where I sat'. Referring to the truly extraordinary partnership that exists, she remarks that 'this father and son relationship is the greatest experience I've ever encountered'.
One treatment that meant much to a family was that of Erine from Alberta, Canada. His sister June wrote to Michael regarding Erine, who in 1989 had been given a diagnosis of incurable lung cancer. The diagnosis had followed after he became aware of lumps on his neck. June notes that 'after having a few treatments of radiation, [he] was taken off all treatments and was told that there was nothing that could be done'. Michael was contacted after June heard of the successful healing of two friends suffering from cancer by the Dr Lang-George Chapman partnership.
June and members of her family travelled to Wales, anxious to obtain healing for Erine. Even on reaching Wales, June notes how her brother 'had lost a lot of weight and was very weak'. Other attempts to prevent further deterioration in his health had also been unsuccessful. An appointment was made to see Michael who as June says, 'made time in his busy schedule to see us desperate foreigners'.
Michael treated Erine, not making any extravagant promises, but merely saying that he would try and prevent any further deterioration until George, his father, returned from abroad where he was carrying out healing work.
The first visit was successful and as Michael had promised, Erine's health did stabilize. In fact after a second visit there was such an improvement that he was well enough to undertake some touring of both Wales and England, an excellent example of what had been achieved through just two visits to Michael.
Following this, Michael saw Erine each week. June wrote of the after- effects when he had returned home to Canada saying, 'Erine did very well..He went for his appointment at the cancer clinic. He astonished the doctors by his good health. The tests showed the tumour in Erine's lungs had shrunk'.
However, after some time the cancer reasserted itself and even after a visit to the Chapmans and a noticeable improvement, Erine lost the battle. Nonetheless, his sister comments that as had been promised, the pain until the very end had been controlled and what had been done had made it possible for Erine to 'enjoy a few more precious months with his loved ones. Erine was able to cope with his illness with dignity and pride...He outlived the doctors' prognosis and had a better life'.
In addition to treating Erine, other members of the family were also suffering serious ill health and the opportunity was taken for Michael to undertake healing for them.
Erine's sister suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and was experiencing considerable pain and distress when she first arrived, particularly with co-ordination and her eyesight having reached the stage where she was left with 'blurred vision and darkness'. However, after seeing Michael she recorded that 'I was always much improved' in respect of her eyesight and co-ordination.
Two persons who wrote to me on hearing that I was seeking reports of successful treatment achieved through Michael Chapman were Moira of Berwickshire, and Paul of Telford.
Moira explained that Michael had undertaken distant healing to assist her with acute pain in her back and legs. With the discomfort, she was also having mobility problems and becoming very depressed. Very shortly after the healing began, Moira noticed an improvement that increased as each day went by. She soon became able to travel and do some gentle swimming. Moira saw Michael in Glasgow during May 1998 for contact healing and says that she 'found it a wonderfully uplifting experience', and 'I came away feeling more cheerful and positive than I have in a very long time'. Naturally, she was dreading the long journey but after seeing Michael she found it was tolerable and was mobile on arriving home.
Of the after-effects, she wrote: 'My back pain vanished completely for several days and although I have had back pain since, it has not been the same. That awful ever-present, grinding-me-down pain has gone completely'. Since the time of seeing Michael, Moira explains that her situation has improved so much that her mobility is much greater and now feels confident that the problem is under control.
Paul wrote describing how, as a soldier, he had seriously injured his knee while on manoeuvres. On attending a hospital, he underwent an arthroscopy and a number of other operations, but none of these brought about any benefit. After leaving the army, he underwent yet further operations and he describes how these 'put me in some long term pain and I had a bad time dealing with it'.
He decided not to have any further operations but attempt to cope with the pain by taking pain-killing medication. Some relief did occur after visiting an osteopath and Paul was able able to reduce the amount of painkillers he was having to take, although he still needed to take these.
Looking back to this time he recalls: 'Because of the pain I had very low tolerance and my fuse was short, due to the lack of sleep. This put my wife and I under great pressure. I was suffering with headaches that could last for days with no release. The painkillers I was taking did nothing to help'.
Through his wife, Paul heard about Michael although he was in so much discomfort, it was left to her to arrange an appointment to see the healer. Paul comments that the events at the healing session surprised him greatly:'When Michael was treating me I felt as though a great weight had been lifted off me, but this was not the most unusual point about the meeting. As Michael did his thing on my head, it felt as though a filter had been removed from my eye and I could see more clearly, not that I had had any problems with my sight. The other thing that came out of this was the fact that my anger levels were wiped away; things still vex me but I am not getting angry. The outcome of which is that I have had no more headaches to date'.
Although there is still what Paul terms 'a very minor pain' in his leg, this only occurs on rare occasions. He is now able to work for periods that would have necessitated having to rest for days when his injury had not been treated by Michael. Paul's concluding remark is: 'I hope this account gives someone the courage to go and see Michael as I feel it's the best thing I have done in years'.
